IS ABORTION LEGAL IN CANADA? Since 1988, abortion has been legally obtainable across Canada. There are of course health laws which ensure that abortions will be provided in a medically safe setting and by a qualified medical practitioner, whether in a hospital or in a -standing clinic (one that is not attached to a hospital). As a medical procedure, abortion is covered by provincial health insurance. Unfortunately, however, abortion is not equally accessible to all women in Canada. This is due, in a very large part, to anti-abortion lobby groups, many of which are encouraged by the Catholic Church. In the entire province of Prince Edward Island, for example, it is not possible to obtain an abortion, and so girls and women from this province must travel to Nova Scotia.
